Revellers in Looe on New Year's Eve will be able to enjoy the traditional midnight fireworks display after local people rallied round a campaign to save the event.
The spectacular seaside display which rounds off the New Year festivities was called off earlier this year after concerns were raised by official bodies in the town including the police, town council and East Looe Town Trust over a number of issues including costs, policing and public safety.
But a campaign led by Michala and Garry Powell has resulted in the difficulties being overcome and funds raised to ensure it goes ahead on the original site, the Banjo Pier.
The final hurdle in enabling the display to go ahead, the arrangement of public liability insurance, has now been cleared but an appeal has gone out for more funds to be donated as the organisers are still about £500 short of their target.
Collecting boxes have been placed with a number of local businesses including Brewers, Daisy's Cafe, Emiles, Lascares, Looe Taxi Office, Purley Cornish Farm Shop and Town Shop, RAB Thompson, Bosuns Locker, Larsons, Kellys, Scissor Sisters, Old Bridge House Hotel, Looe Gallery, Ruby's Cafe, Threshers, Tregonnan, Julian Graves, Looe Pet Shop, Moonlight Tandoori, and East Looe Post Office.
The organisers say fundraising will continue throughout next year to ensure the display goes ahead in 2009 as well.
