I AM writing in reply to Mrs J Darlington's letter, Town needs big supermarket (Cornish Times, 17.07.09).

I am astounded that she is astounded that local traders oppose plans for a Tesco store.

Originally from London, there are a few things I miss, particularly having a supermarket and a sports centre close to hand.

Yes, people do travel to Liskeard or Bodmin to do their main shop and use local shops for top-ups during the week.

And that is my point, what is wrong with that?

Surely this keeps everybody happy!

Think of all the stores that would suffer if Tesco moved in – Somerfield, Boots, the Co-op, the vegetable stores and the fish market, not to mention the Spar and Londis stores and many many more.

Yes, the people of Looe do need a say in this matter, and I am one of them.

And, I am sure, I am not the only one who feels this way.
