People are set to be banned from drinking on the streets of Liskeard after the town council approved an alcohol-free policy. Police in the town will be given the powers to confiscate alcohol from anyone drinking in and around the town centre. 'We need to change the attitude to alcohol in the town,' said councillor David Rowe. The area of the ban covers north towards the top of the Parade and south down into Rapsons Field. It also includes Castle Park to the east and as far as Thorn Park to the west. There have been similar bans in Looe and St Austell and where some councillors see them as a success, others disagree. 'An alcohol ban is an insult to the people of Liskeard. I have as yet, and I stand to be proved wrong, to see the evidence that merits a ban,' said councillor Tony Powell. 'The youth and other people who drink in this town are responsible people,' he added. The order makes provisions for pubs to have drinking areas such as beer gardens or tables outside. The request has been sent to Caradon council, which will implement the ban.
