Scary moments

in peak practice

A CHALLENGE which will see a team of policemen tackling 10 peaks around Great Britain and Ireland is due to take place next month.

Eight officers from the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and the Ministry of Defence Police will be undertaking the challenge on May 12-17 to raise money for CLIC (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood Trust) and Cancer Research UK.

The constables, including Steve Barker and Chris Pearn from Torpoint, have set up the Forces Against Cancer Appeal Fund to collect donations and have so far raised more than £24,000.

Chris said: "We have held training sessions in Wales and they've been a bit of an eye-opener. On Pen-y-van in the Brecon Beacons there were 50 mph winds gusting to 80 mph - it was frightening really.

"The challenge involves the eight officers attempting to walk to each summit of 10 challenging mountains in the United Kingdom and Ireland in five days.

"These mountains will include the highest peaks in each of the countries, Ben Nevis in Scotland, Snowdon in Wales, Carrauntoohil in Southern Ireland, Scafell Pike in England and Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland. The other five mountains are as equally challenging.

"The collective height of the 10 mountains chosen for the purpose of this challenge exceeds the height of Mount Everest."

A charity golf tournament in aid of the appeal fund will take place at Whitsand Bay Golf Course on May 2. Chris can be contacted for more information via e-mail at [email protected]">[email protected]

Golden jubilee

celebrations

in jeopardy

PLANS for a special festival in Torpoint to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee have been put in jeopardy after only two people turned up this week to a public meeting about the event.

Roy Roseveare, who played a leading role in organising the town's successful Millennium celebrations, was hoping for a good response over proposals for a day of jubilee celebrations in June.

Much of the funding is in place for the Festival of Light and Music after the organisers from the Torpoint Community Development Trust gained a £5,000 Awards For All Lottery grant but people willing to help with the event are now being asked to come forward as a matter of urgency.

Roy, as chairman of the organising committee, had been hoping members of the community would have gone along to the public meeting on Tuesday night at the Scout Hall to offer their support for the festival and put forward ideas.

Speaking after the meeting, he said: "Only two people turned up which leaves us a problem with where we go from here. The celebration is in jeopardy unless people come forward to help organise it.

"We have the funding but not the people. The two people who attended the meeting were willing to help but we will need around 40 people altogether on the day.

"If people are not willing to become involved, the lottery money may have to be returned.

"I am hoping people who can help will contact me on 01752 813150 within the next week. Or they can contact the committee treasurer, Lyn Murray, on 01752 812850 (day) or 01752 816647 (home).

"We need about eight people to plan the event and there will be roughly one meeting a week until the festival takes place. I am hoping any apathy will be overcome and people will get involved."

The festival, which is due to take place at the Lawns on June 3, would include entertainment for all ages, starting at noon and finishing at midnight.
