New award for PE teacher

CHRIS Goodman, head of PE at Torpoint School, has been awarded an MBA in Education Management after completing a distance learning course run by the University of Leicester.

Chris attended Plymouth Public Secondary School for Girls and the Bedford College of Physical Education where she was awarded a teachers' certificate.

She then went into teaching full-time, working at Plymouth High School for Girls,1977-78, Coombe Dean School Plymouth, 1978-80, and Cardinal Newman High School, Luton, 1980-83, before going onto Torpoint Community School in 1983. Whilst teaching, Chris continued to study part-time, gaining a B.Ed (Hons) from the College of St Mark and St John in Plymouth, a research degree from the University of Exeter and recently, the MBA from Leicester.

While working at Torpoint School, Chris has gained promotion, raised three children and been involved in the campaign to bring a leisure centre to the town.

Collections start for new season

GARDEN waste collections are starting again in Torpoint after a winter break.

In the Caradon District Council scheme, garden waste is collected every fortnight from special sacks placed outside properties.

Collections in Torpoint, Antony and Wilcove take place on a Monday with the next collection date being March 18.

Collections in villages on the Rame Peninsula are organised for alternate Mondays with the first collection of the new season being on March 11.

This year garden waste will be collected through the scheme until the end of November. There will be one collection in January of next year when used Christmas trees will also be taken away.

In Torpoint, garden waste sacks are available from Torpoint Builders Merchants, Rally Food and Wine, and Torpoint Hardware in Fore Street.

Crafthole Post Office and Stores, Downderry Spar Shop, Kingsand Village Store and Millbrook Spar Shop also sell the sacks.

Any garden waste placed out for collection that is not in an official sack will not be collected.

Wall works

TRAFFIC lights will be operating in New Road, Pen Den Har, Cawsand, until April 26 while CORMAC carries out retaining wall works. Meanwhile, Trewrickle Lane at Crafthole will be closed until tomorrow (March 9) for patching works.

New art group

meets in village

A NEW art group has been started in Wilcove near Torpoint.

The Wilcove Art Group held its first meeting on Friday in the village hall. Dartmoor artist Jon Christian visited the group of around 15 people and passed on tips about painting watercolour pictures.

The second meeting of the group will take place today (March 8) in the village hall at 2pm. The meeting will be led by Ann Moore and Bernice Sanderson who have played key roles in starting the group.

The group, which has gained outside funding, will mainly concentrate on painting.

for Cornwall

CROSS country runner Daniel Clift from Torpoint School will be representing Cornwall at the English Schools Championships tomorrow (March 9).
