All-day breakfasts
to aid charity
ANOTHER all-day breakfast event is to take place in Torpoint.
The breakfasts have proved popular with local people and have helped to raise money for good causes.
The town's library will be hosting its second all-day breakfast from 10am on Friday, March 1.
The event, part of a national effort, will be raising money for the Cancer Research Campaign, which is now part of Cancer Research UK following a merger with the Imperial Cancer Research Fund.
Library manager Kate Wilton said: "Because it is also St David's Day we will be having a display of daffodils from the Antony Farms Estate.
"Library staff will be cooking on the premises and we will be serving bacon rolls, croissants and jam, cereals, fruit juice, coffee and, possibly, sausages to members of the public.
"People will be invited to make donations in a box.
"We held a similar event last year and sold out of bacon rolls by noon - people were coming up from the ferry queues.
"The Co-op store in Torpoint is among the sponsors of this year's event."
Trees given to school
THREE trees have been given to Torpoint Infant School to thank pupils for taking part in a recycling scheme.
Last year pupils collected more than 440 Yellow Pages directories for recycling into animal bedding as part of a national scheme.
To thank the school for taking part, Cornwall County Council has sent three small rowan trees from Duchy Nursery to be planted in the school grounds.
"As they mature, they will add both colour and welcome shade to our playground," said a school spokesperson. The school is hoping to collect even more directories for recycling this year.
Meanwhile, the school is also collecting free books for schools tokens from The Sun, the News of the World and Walkers crisps.
It is asking parents of pupils to group the tokens in 10s and 100s and place them in a collection box in the school's reception area.
Advice issued
on golden
jubilee events
PEOPLE in Torpoint and the surrounding district who are planning celebrations to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee can consult a new advice sheet from Caradon District Council.
The information sheet is aimed at the organisers of small events and lists issues they may wish to consider such as insurance, holding events on council-owned land and the need to apply for road closures as soon as possible and no later than the first week in May.
In addition to this, the sheet includes information on the Lottery's Awards for All grants. Although not available to fund street parties, the grants can be used for other events connected with the golden jubilee or more permanent ways of marking the jubilee such as murals or community woodlands.
For a copy of the events information sheet, contact Caradon District Council on 01579 341000.
Another big drop
in town crime
THE number of reported crimes in Torpoint has dropped significantly, according to the latest police figures.
The statistics show that 19 crimes were reported in the town at the start of the year compared to 50 in the same period last year.
Final figures for 2001 reveal that 491 crimes were committed in the town compared to 626 during 2000.
Among the recent crimes were one robbery, one assault, one burglary, four thefts, five motor vehicle offences, two public order incidents, four criminal damage offences and one drink-drive case.
Former pupils
arrange reunion
PEOPLE who left Torpoint School 21 years ago are being invited to attend a reunion.
The organisers say they are feeling nostalgic and are hoping for a big turn-out of pupils who last wore the school uniform in 1981.
The reunion has been arranged for Saturday, May 25, and more details are available from Karen Wake (nee Scott) on 01752 816130 or Richard Hallett on 01752 816008.
They are hoping those attending the reunion will take along old school photographs.
Extension plan
AN extension is being planned at the Torpoint and District Comrades and United Services Club in Modder Road. A planning application for an extension to the entrance hall has been submitted to Caradon District Council. The plan includes proposals for disabled access and a disabled toilet.
Prize for cadets
TORPOINT Army Cadets have been awarded second prize in the County Poppy Competition. The cadets, who are strong supporters of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, received a certificate and a cheque. The Mayor of Torpoint, Stan Martin, has voiced his congratulations over the cadets' achievement.
No objections
NO objections have been raised by Torpoint Town Council to a plan to build two three-storey accommodation blocks in the grounds of the HMS Raleigh naval base.
