Festive quiz

boosts cadets

TWENTY-FIVE teams took part in a fun Christmas charity quiz in Torpoint.

The quiz, organised by Mal Girling, was held at the Torpoint and District Comrades and United Services Club.

The contest was won by a team featuring the secretary of the club, calling themselves the Sec's Team. They donated their £60 first prize to St Luke's Hospice in Plymouth.

There were joint runners-up. Flo's Floozies, a team of Torpoint nurses, donated their £20 prize to nurses' funds while the Pickled Snails, a group of keen quiz fans, gave their £20 prize to Cancer Research.

Another £26 raised by entry fees went to the national Salvation Army Christmas Soup Run Appeal.

A raffle raised £271 for the St John Ambulance Nursing Cadets in Torpoint. There are 25 girls, aged between 10 and 18, in the cadets and they will be using the money for first aid kits and uniforms.

Mal has now staged eight quizzes since May 1998 and has raised more than £2,800 for local causes.

He said: "I would like to say a big thank you to the Comrades Club for hosting the quiz and to all the businesses and individuals who donated raffle prizes."

School fundraiser

TORPOINT Infant School has started a new fundraising venture.

The school in Albion Road is offering a photocopying service for members of the public.

Governor Louise Edwards said the school has spare photocopying capacity and that people who want copying done can call into the school reception area.

Charges range from 5p for an A4 black and white sheet to 70p for a laminated A3 colour copy.

Survey looking

at rundown

park problems

A NEW survey is to look into problems at a rundown park on the waterfront in Torpoint.

Caradon district councillor John Chadwick has told town councillors that the South West of England Regional Development Agency is to finance the survey into the problems of Rendel Park by the Torpoint Ferry lanes.

Land at the park, which was once the site of gas works, is contaminated and will need to be cleaned up before any plans to revamp the park can be turned into reality.

Poster wins

guides contest

CONGRATULATIONS go to 12-year-old Kelly Owen of the 2nd Torpoint Guides who was delighted to learn that her poster had won a local competition, which was judged by artist Michael Howells.

Kelly's poster goes on to district level to compete against entries from Land's End to Bristol.

The ultimate winner from 24 finalists worldwide will receive a grand prize of £1,700 plus a trip to the USA.

Thanks were given to guides leader Christine Walking for running the competition which produced such a high standard of entries.
