Friends off to
a flying start
A GROUP set up to support Torpoint Infant School has enjoyed a successful start.
The group began earlier this year as the school's parent teacher association and has since decided to become known as the Friends of Torpoint Infant School.
Its committee took the decision because it felt the name was better suited to the association and would allow anyone who was interested in supporting the school to be a member, not just parents and teachers.
One of the first projects the Friends have tackled is raising £2,000 towards the refurbishment of the school library. They are well on their way to reaching the target.
The Friends are holding regular sales of second-hand school uniform on the first and third Thursdays of each month at the school, with the next sale scheduled for September 6.
The group would welcome donations of unwanted items of uniform, including trousers, shorts, dresses, skirts and PE kit, from the parents of past and present pupils.
The Friends' committee is chaired by Amanda Booth with Wendy Williams and Louise Slee as joint vice-chairs.
Christina Fletcher is the treasurer and Frank Bolton is the secretary. Teresa Hodgetts, Carol Brown and Louise Edwards are also members of the committee.
Father's Day walk
gets the go-ahead
AN annual sponsored walk, postponed earlier this year because of the foot and mouth situation, is now due to take place in September.
The Torpoint and Rame Peninsular Lions Club's Father's Day walk usually takes place each year in June on the peninsular.
A sponsored walk in lieu of that event will be held on Sunday, September 16.
Club public relations officer John Kentisbeer said: "Starting at Maker Church from 10am, there is a choice of two routes, one of 10 miles and one of five.
"Both cover some of the most beautiful scenery and coastline in the Rame Peninsula.
"The walk is well-signposted and everyone is issued with a map.
"This year we will be making a substantial donation to the Cavitron Fund for a gamma knife."
Surgeons at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth will use this piece of equipment to remove brain tumours.
Sponsor forms are available for the walk from Dave Rosson's barber shop in Elliot Square, Torpoint.
Meanwhile, Lion Jenny Gamm has organised two more coach trips. The first is to Bath on Friday, September 7. Tickets, costing £8 each, are available from the barber's shop.
The coach will leave Torpoint School car park at 8am.
The second trip is to the Bridgwater Carnival on Saturday, November 3. The coach will leave the school car park at 1.30pm with a late return. Tickets at £7 will be available in October.
A coach trip to Dartmouth earlier in the summer, organised by Jenny, was a sell-out.
Crossing site chosen
TORPOINT town councillors have heard that the proposed new pedestrian crossing for Harvey Street – part of the main road through the town – would be at Sparrow Park. The proposal has been put forward by Cornwall County Council.
