Police up the beat on patrols
POLICE officers are to spend more time pounding the beat in Torpoint.
The news was given to town councillors by Sergeant David Heard, community action sergeant for Torpoint and Looe.
Sgt Heard gave details of new policing arrangements for the area and said that emphasis would be placed on the community aspects of policing with officers spending more time on foot patrol.
Commenting on crime figures for the town, he noted that in the three months to the end of June there were 36 percent fewer reported incidents than in the corresponding period last year.
Thefts of cycles were slightly up but violent crime was down 14 percent and common assault down 47 percent.
In response to a question from Councillor John Garner on the misuse of ball bearing guns in the town's skateboard park, Sgt Heard said that whilst the guns were legal, he would monitor the situation.
Orchestral music – but not a musician in sight
ORCHESTRAL music will fill the air at Mount Edgcumbe Country Park tomorrow evening (August 25) – but there won't be a musician in sight!
The Friends of the country park on the Rame Peninsula stage Music in the Park, a hi-fi concert of light classical music, in the Italian Garden from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. It will include pieces by Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Saint Saens.
The organisers say 1000 watts of amplification will create the feeling that an orchestra is actually playing in the park. Members of the audience are being invited to take along a picnic to the concert.
Tickets, costing £3 for members of the Friends and £4 for non-members, are available from Mount Edgcumbe House on 01752 822236 or at the gate.
Marines to head procession
TORPOINT is gearing up for a day of fun tomorrow (August 25) when the town's annual carnival takes place.
Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions Club has organised the day which will feature a procession and entertainment in the town centre.
Fore Street, which will play host to stalls and the entertainment, will be closed to traffic from 1pm to 6pm.
The carnival procession, led by the Band of HM Royal Marines Plymouth, leaves from Torpoint School at 3.30pm and travels down Antony Road.
Carnival royalty were chosen earlier in the year at the Lions' Cambridge Field fete. The king and queen are James Conyon and Lisa Wheatly and the prince and princess are Conor Waldock and Danielle Weeks.
