Yellow pages

sculpture

A SCULPTURE made from old Yellow Pages directories has won Carbeile Junior School first prize in a countywide competition.

Pupils at the Torpoint school took part in the Directory Recycling Scheme which included a competition for the best sculpture using the bulky directories.

The children created a sculpture of Maryfield Church which is on the outskirts of Torpoint near Antony House.

Their creation, which won a prize of £50 given by Cornwall County Council, is being recreated for a display at the Eden Project near St Austell.

Meanwhile, Carbeile pupil Lucy Holmes won prizes worth £50. She collected 365 old directories for recycling, the most of any pupil in the Caradon district. Lucy received a £10 book token and £40 from Caradon District Council to go towards a project at the school.

Carbeile was also highly commended in the scheme for collecting more than two copies per pupils. The school, which has 465 on its registers, collected a total of 1009 copies.

More than 100 schools took part in the scheme which saw Torpoint Infants collecting 442 directories, Antony School 150 and Millbrook School 132.

Last year the Cornish schools collected 30 tonnes of old Yellow Pages for recycling into an animal bedding product called Newshred. This year they amazed the organisers by increasing the amount collected by 50%, boosting the schools' total to 45 tonnes.

The Directory Recycling Scheme co-ordinates Yellow Pages recycling nationally and is delighted once again with Cornwall's efforts. In recognition of the outstanding results, each school is being given a voucher for a tree to plant in their school grounds.

Green paper banks placed around the county and kerbside collections organised by district councils brought in a further 15 tonnes bringing this year's total to 60 tonnes.
