Funds raised at Wilcove sale
A CAMPAIGN to raise £1 million for Macmillan Cancer Relief has received a boost from a successful sale held in Wilcove near Torpoint.
Peter Moore, who grew up in the Torpoint area, and his team-mate Scott Gilchrist are planning to row the Atlantic Ocean in the autumn and to raise the mammoth total for the cancer charity in the process.
Peter's mother, Ann, who lives in Torpoint, organised a tabletop sale in Wilcove Village Hall on Saturday which has raised £447 to date for the charity.
"The people of the village were brilliant in the way they supported the event," said Ann.
"Donations are still coming in, especially from people who read the article about Peter and Scott in last week's Cornish Times."
Peter, 27, and Scott, who row for the Lea Rowing Club in London, are taking part in the Chay Blythe Challenge 2001 race which starts on October 7 from Tenerife. They aim to row 3,367 miles to Barbados in a six-metre open boat.
The England football captain, David Beckham, launched their campaign to raise £1 million for Macmillan Cancer Relief and has continued to support the fundraising.

Local support for Kenyan teenager
A TEENAGER in Africa is receiving help with his education thanks to the efforts of people in Torpoint.
Mackmillan Kadenge, who lives in Kenya, has received particular support from Tim Singleton who works as a civilian at the HMS Raleigh naval base.
"Mackmillan has a dream of helping his community in his native Malindi by becoming a teacher. His father died two years ago and Mackmillan was left to look after his family and try to raise enough money to continue his education," said a HMS Raleigh spokesperson.
"HMS Raleigh's Warrant Officers & Senior Rates Mess very generously offered to support the fundraising for the first two years of Mackmillan's higher education.
"Since November 2000, Tim has been using the money raised from the recycling of used printer toner cartridges to continue supporting Mackmillan."
Tim, who is employed by Flagship Training as the co-ordinator of the information technology support department at the naval base, found a company which pays up to £4 for every used cartridge.
He said: "Not only is this good for the environment but someone less fortunate is directly benefiting from my efforts."
Tim has presented a cheque for £190 to two teachers at Torpoint School who are involved in supporting the Malindi project. Jill Roberts has taken a lead role in the project and is soon to take up a teaching post in Kenya. Her role in the project will be taken over by fellow teacher Louis Phillips.
