Mayor's charity
receives a boost
A CHEQUE for more than £1,250 has been presented to the Mayor of Torpoint's charity of the year.
Mayor Stan Martin chose the Friends of Derriford Hospital Kidney Unit to benefit from fundraising during his first year in office.
Stan and his wife Christine, the mayoress, staged several fundraising events during the year. Town councillor Mike Pearn and his wife Val also held a sale to boost funds.
The biggest single donation to the mayor's charity came from the Torpoint Lady Singers and the Rame Peninsular Male Voice Choir who gave a joint Christmas concert at St James Church in the town and between then raised £654.
"We are really very very pleased with the support that we have been given by the people of the town over the year in raising this money," said Mr Martin.
At a presentation evening, a cheque for £1,250.50 was given to Dr Peter Rowe from the Renal Unit at Derriford Hospital.
The presentation in Torpoint Council Chambers was attended by representatives of organisations and individuals who had supported the fundraising.
Mr Martin has chosen another good cause, the Chestnut Appeal, to benefit from his second year in office.
"The Chestnut Appeal is raising money for people being treated for prostrate cancer at Derriford Hospital," said Mrs Martin.
"The appeal wants to set up a state-of-the-art unit at the hospital to provide effective treatment for prostrate cancer patients.
"Sir Harry Secombe was patron of the appeal before his death."

Ferry
Consultations
A FINAL decision about the new Torpoint Ferries is expected in June, a recent meeting of CHAT (Community Health Around Torpoint) was told.
Members of the organisation were informed that there will be exhibitions on the Rame Peninsula during May and two public meetings are planned for June.
It was commented on that the exhibition in Torpoint was due to close at 6pm while the outlying exhibitions would be running into the evening. This matter was to be raised with the ferry consultants on CHAT's behalf.
*As well as monthly meetings which the public are welcome to attend at Torpoint Health Clinic (first Wednesday in the month), CHAT arranges liaison lunches for representatives of the voluntary and statutory organisations in the area.
The aim is for those attending to be able to learn more about what other organisations are able to offer. These lunches take place at the clinic in Hooper Street on the last Friday of each month from 12.15pm to 1.30pm. Lunch is available for £2.50 but please let Lynn know by ringing 01752 812850 the Wednesday before if you want it. Or bring your own lunch.
