Safety quiz

YOUNGSTERS from the Torpoint area will be testing their road safety knowledge tonight (Friday, March 2).

Ten teams have entered for the Juliette Cup competition for children aged between seven and 11 years old and entries have also been invited for the Jill Cup contest for older children.

The winners from Torpoint will go forward to represent the area in the Caradon finals will take place at Callington on March 9.

The secretary of the Torpoint contests, Chris Martin, who is this year's Mayoress of Torpoint, said the event will take place at Carbeile Junior School at 7pm with the questionmaster being local policeman Paul Roper.

Each team has four members and a reserve. Teams from Carbeile and Antony schools will be competing with Brownies, Guides and Cubs in the Juliette Cup.

The questions for these teams are based on a new book called Arrive Alive which is a version of the Highway Code for youngsters.

More entries would be welcome for the Jill Cup in which the questions are based on the standard Highway Code.

CHAT meeting on

river discharging

THE discharge of radioactive material into the River Tamar was discussed at the latest monthly meeting of CHAT (Community Health Around Torpoint)

The well-attended meeting heard from Ian Avent, the chairman of CANSAR (Campaign Against Nuclear Storage and Radiation), a group from the Keyham area of Plymouth.

The group is trying to find out more about the plans for changes to radioactive discharges from Devonport Dockyard and the related health and safety issues.

The dockyard wants to increase its discharges of tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen, into the river and decrease the amount of cobalt 60 discharges. Certain radioactive gases may also be released into the air. The discharges are linked with work on nuclear submarines.

The CHAT meeting, held at Torpoint Health Clinic, was shown a BBC television programme called The Wasteland.

Following this, Mr Avent encouraged the people present to form a group on the Rame Peninsula and to approach the local MP, Colin Breed, and Torpoint Town Council.

The Environment Agency has said that radiation doses to the public from the proposed new discharges would remain well below the legal limits.

Shop treasurer

to stand down

THE latest meeting of CHAT (Community Health Around Torpoint) opened with the news that the Torpoint Community Shop's treasurer was having to stand down in March.

The shop in the town centre is a joint venture between CHAT and the Torpoint and Rame Community Nurses Friends.

It raises money for the two groups as well as other good causes.

Anyone with experience as a treasurer who would be interested in taking over the role for the shop was asked to contact CHAT. The meeting heard that a possible replacement had been lined up.

There was then a discussion about Meditubes which used to be produced by St John Ambulance and cost £15 for 50.

They are a way of a person carrying information on their medication. It was felt that CHAT should co-ordinate with other organisations such as the ambulance service and the town council to keep them for people on the Rame Peninsula.

Meanwhile, people at the meeting were urged to recycle their old Yellow Pages directories.

The CHATlink information centre in Macey Street was collecting the directories and passing them on to local schools. Torpoint Infants School is one of the schools that has been taking part in the recycling scheme.

It was reported that improvements to the bus connection to Derriford Hospital were still being sought and it was pointed out that the fares are inclusive from Torpoint or the Millbrook /Cawsand area via either Devonport or the city centre.

The buses (11 and 11A) from Pottery Quay (by the Devonport slipways of the Torpoint Ferry) now leave at six minutes past the hour and 46 minutes past the hour. Coming back from Derriford they leave at 11 minutes and 41 minutes past the hour.

CHAT's next monthly meeting will be on March 7 at 7.30pm at the clinic.

Glass shelters

AROUND a dozen new mainly glass bus shelters are due to be put up in Torpoint this month.

The town council has signed an agreement with More Group UK Ltd which means the shelters will be provided in Goad Avenue, Trevithick Avenue, Trevol Road and Antony Road.
