Sleigh rides raise

more than £3,000

MORE than £3,200 was donated to the Lions' charity chest following Santa's sleigh rides in December, organised by the Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions club.

Special thanks went to the people of Millbrook where, on two evening visits and with one static pitch, over £630 was donated. Forthcoming events for the branch include a senior citizen's concert on March 15 in the Torpoint council hall, a car boot sale on March 25 and a coach trip to Barnstaple on April 20.

The senior citizen's concert will be held on only one night this year, with admission by ticket only for up to 120 seats. Tickets will be available from Lion Dave Rosson's barber shop towards the end of the month, and anyone wishing to take part in the entertainment should ring Lion Brian on 01752 813056. Three new wheelchairs have been bought, two to go into the pool and one to be handed to the Torpoint Comrades and United Services club. There are now eight wheelchairs in the pool, issued regularly on short term loan. Anyone wishing one for an incapacitated friend or relative should contact welfare chairman, Lion Peter Blakey, on 01752 823992.

The Lions recently donated £100 to Plymouth Hospital Radio.

Pupils attend

church service

PUPILS from all three Torpoint schools took part in an Education Sunday service at St James Church in the town centre.

The infants school was represented by a choir of 20 children from Year 2 who received many compliments for their singing.

Contributions from Carbeile Junior School and Torpoint School were also well-appreciated, particularly the playing of the senior school stage band.

An exhibition of children's work was mounted to tie in with Education Sunday. A large picture on the theme of "The Creation" was contributed by Year 2 at the infants school. Following the exhibition, the picture was being put on display at the school.

Come and sizzle

in the library

STAFF at Torpoint Library will be creating some sizzling sensations of their own next week.

But rather than penning hot prose to rival the likes of Jackie Collins and Gilly Cooper, they will be working over a frying pan!

"When the library opens at 10am on Friday, March 2, people will be greeted by the aroma of bacon being cooked," explained library manager Kate Wilton.

"We are taking part in the All-Day Breakfast event sponsored by Kelloggs in support of Cancer Research.

"Library staff will be cooking bacon on the premises to use in bacon rolls. We will also be providing orange juice, cereals and coffee.

"The All-Day Breakfast is a new campaign and the staff wanted to support it to raise money for research."

Verging on the

complicated!

WHEN is a footpath not a footpath? When it's a grass verge, according to Cornwall County Council.

Torpoint town councillors had called on the county highways department to improve the standard of the "footpath" between HMS Raleigh and Horson crossroads.

However, the department has responded by telling the councillors that the path is not classified as a footway but as a grass verge, even though hardcore was put down around 10 years ago.

The department said there was no money available in its budget to upgrade the verge and that the request would be kept on file.

Councillor Ivan Southworth said he would like to see the footway from HMS Raleigh extended to include what is described as the grass verge and urged the council to keep up the pressure on the highways department.
