Two-minute silence

A TWO-MINUTE silence to remember those killed during armed conflicts is set to be officially observed in the centre of Torpoint on Armistice Day this year.

The towns Royal British Legion is seeking permission from Caradon District Council to hold an act of remembrance in Sparrow Park at 11 oclock on Saturday, November 11.

"The two-minute silence on the 11th of the 11th has become more recognised across the country in recent years," said Brian Williams of the Torpoint RBL.

He explained that the local RBL wished to hold a public two-minute silence which could be observed by many people in the town centre.

Civic dignitaries and representatives of the RBL will be present at Sparrow Park, which is next to the post office in Fore Street, and a bugler will play.

Ex-servicemen have traditionally taken part in an act of remembrance on Armistice Day at the Horson Cemetery on the outskirts of the town.

It is planned that this year the ceremony at the war graves in the cemetery will take place after the higher profile event in Sparrow Park.

The town council has given its support to the proposal for a two-minute silence in the park.

The annual Remembrance Day parade and service will be held in the centre of the town on Sunday, November 12.

Tennis success

TORPOINT Tennis Association teams were well-represented at this years Plymouth & District League presentation evening held at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel.

After the disappointment of missing out on promotion last year by one set, Torpoint A mens team won the Division 5 title by the narrowest of margins from Tavistock. Sam Matthews and Calum Wilson collected the trophy and Dave Greenhalgh and Clint Fowell picked up the top players awards.

In Division 7 of the mens league, the newly-formed Torpoint B, composed mainly of players from St Germans, had an excellent first season and surprised themselves by winning the league title ahead of strong favourites Hill Lane.

Malcolm Hocking and Tony Horner collected the trophy on behalf of the team.

After a gap of several years, Torpoint entered a team in the Junior Under 18 League and won Division 4 by a considerable margin. Mark Zinn, Caroline Selby and Sam Greenhalgh played some excellent tennis throughout the season and were all present to collect the winners trophy.

Earlier in the season, Torpoint entered a boys team in the Under 13 National Rover League. In the North Cornwall/Caradon section, the team finished in a creditable third place with excellent performances from Louis Dulling, Chris Cross and Dean Penny.

At the Cornwall Junior County Championships held at St Austell, Torpoints Shelley Fowell was defeated in the final of the girls Under 18 Singles by Vickie Eames from Duloe and then partnered her to win the girls Under 18 Doubles title. Shelley was also a runner-up in the Under 18 Mixed final with partner Tim Webster from Fletchers Bridge, Bodmin.

Several Torpoint players are actively engaged in the Cornwall County Training programme and with regular coaching sessions held at the club the future is looking good for Torpoint tennis.
