Lawnstock festival

THE third annual Lawnstock pop music and arts festival attracted large crowds to Thanckes Park in Torpoint.

Six bands played on the main stage at the Lawns from 3pm to midnight on Saturday and there was a variety of entertainment laid on in the park.

Lawnstock co-ordinator Nick Wood said: "It was a great day. Excellent. We were busy throughout the day and the weather was pleasant and quite warm in the evening.

"A good number of youngsters watched the children's entertainer, Organic Bill, in the afternoon. He did fire-eating and juggling.

"In the evening, the Dance Tent went down a storm. It was the first time we had had the tent and there was a lot of interest.

"The event ended with fireworks at midnight and around 1,000 people were there."

The bands taking part came from Plymouth and Cornwall. They were Rhys Crispies Dectet, Fall Out, Break Out, Piledriver, Freak Show, and Ebb And Flo, from Torpoint, who stepped in at short notice.

The festival was held to raise money for local causes. Before the event the organising committee had already pledged to sponsor new kit for the Torpoint Youth under-10 football team. The total raised will be announced in due course.

Nick said: "The town council contributed towards the insurance for the event but apart from that we had to raise all the funds to stage the festival through ticket sales and the advertising in the Lawnstock programme.

"We would like to thank all the local businesses who advertised and also HMS Raleigh which supplied some of the equipment including the marquee for the beer tent.

"Lawnstock committee members stewarded the event and the police were happy with the way it went."

The committee is hoping to stage Lawnstock again next year.

Sponsored walker

A 13-year-old girl from Torpoint has walked across Cornwall to raise funds from the town's new one-stop information and advice centre.

Katie Sodenberg walked between Padstow on the county's north coast and Fowey on the south coast, a distance of 30 miles, over a weekend.

She has raised more than £305 which will go to the CHATlink centre in Macey Street.

CHAT (Community Health Around Torpoint) has opened the centre to provide information and advice on a wide range of issues. Several organisations and agencies, including the Benefits Agency, are sending representatives to the centre to give help and advice to members of the public.

Margaret Hall, the chairman of CHAT, said: "Katie did the walk as part of the Bishop's Challenge which asks young people who have been confirmed to choose a charity to help.

"Katie, who was confirmed at Maryfield Church, was going to do the walk for a national charity to start with but her grandmother Gill Gulley suggested she did it for CHATlink.

"Katie took part in the walk with people from all over Cornwall. She was a bit stiff afterwards but she was still smiling.

"We are extremely pleased with the amount she has raised, bearing in mind that CHATlink is a voluntary organisation which has to raise its own funds."

Once all the money has been collected in by Katie, there is likely to be a special presentation to CHATlink.
