Awards for Scouts and leaders
Over 70 people, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Torpoint, Bob and Christine Cross, and senior scouters attended a presentation ceremony held at the Mosquito Sailing Club, Torpoint. County Commissioner Andy Nail presented Philip Griffiths and Wesley Swain with their Queen's Scout awards. These awards are the highest that Venture scouts can be awarded, and are only the fourth and fifth such awards achieved by the 2nd Torpoint Venture sea scouts in nine years since their formation. During the ceremony further awards, including a Venture award (which is a prerequisite before attempting a Queen's Scout award), was presented to Chris Painter. Other awards presented were the Chief Scout's Award to Mark Killingsworth, the Assistant Venture Scout Leader Warrant to Greg Phillips and certificates for 10 years' service as a warranted leader to Bob Andrews, and five years' service to Roy Roseveare and Dan Andrews.
Sharks and science
A talk on sharks is to be given to children in Torpoint as part of National Science Week.
Douglas Herdson, the information of the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, will be talking about the predators at Torpoint Library on Tuesday, March 21.
Mr Herdson will be presenting a slide show with his talk, which will be given at 5pm and 6pm. Admission is by ticket.
The library's community liaison officer, Joanna Price, has been co-ordinating all the county library service's activities for the week.
One of the activities is a competition for an invention.
Children in three groups, under five, under 11 and under 18 years, are being challenged to produce a labelled drawing or diagram of their invention for the 21st Century.
The closing date for entries is Saturday, April 15.
Congratulations, Pete
TORPOINT town councillors have joined in the chorus of congratulation for yachtsman Pete Goss. Councillors are keen to pass on their congratulations to Pete who has strong connections with the town. His new £4-million super-yacht, Team Philips, has been generating enormous interest.
Cars pose problem
The problem of cars parking on pavements in certain areas of Torpoint is being raised with the police by the town council. Complaints have been made about vehicles on pavements especially in Sconner and York Road. Councillors agreed to write to the police about the matter.
Tennis coaching
Junior coaching sessions are currently being held at Torpoint Tennis Club on Saturday mornings commencing at 9.30am.
These sessions are organised by Cornwall county development officer Paul Roberts and Torpoint and Cornwall county player Helen Fowell.

Fears over swans
Fears that swans may be in danger from drinking water that had collected in boats on Town Beach in Torpoint have been allayed.
Torpoint town councillors heard that a resident had been concerned for the safety of the birds.
Town clerk Chris Harris told the councillors he had spoken to the RSPCA and had been informed that the water had been analysed by Caradon District Council and found to be clean.
Blood donations
You can give blood on Thursday, March 23, at Torpoint Council Chambers at 4 York Road, between 1.30pm and 3.15pm and 5pm to 7.15pm.
