Singathon to help two girls

A Torpoint lady singers singathon, held earlier this year in aid of the Bethany and Ceri Trust, raised £1,900.

A cheque for this amount was presented to Mrs Astill, mother of Bethany and Ceri, by chairperson of the choir, Betty Bevan, at a recent ceremony at Maryfield church prior to choir practice.

The two girls, and their brother, were also present at the event and were given teddy bears.

Mrs Astill said, in thanking the choir for their donation to the trust fund and the gifts for the girls, that the support extended to the family had been overwhelming. She also explained the trust fund had been set up to provide specialist help for the Bethany and Ceri who suffer from muscular atrophy.

Watch station volunteers

The National Coastwatch Institution coastal surveillance station at Rame Head will be open from 9am to 5pm, seven days a week, from November 1, this due to a recruitment campaign during the summer.

A band of volunteers watches and logs movements of sailing and fishing vessels passing the station.

A listening-only watch is maintained on the VHF emergency channels 16/ 67 and direct telephone connection with Brixham coastguard station is maintained.

Coastal path walkers, surfers and swimmers using Whitsand Bay are also watched.

The prime objective is to work in conjunction with the Coastguard and rescue services to provide a visual lookout, using the old Coastguard lookout stations closed down over the past 20 years.

Anybody interested in volunteering for watch duties should contact the station directly during watch hours.
