Torpoint's top fireman, Station Officer David Hunt is to retire at the end of the month, after 30 years with the Cornwall Fire Service. David, 54, has led the retained fire fighters for the last four years. He joined the fire service in early 1976, after being cajoled and pestered by his late wife, Pam, who's father, George Steer, was the then Station Officer. There is a bit of a family tradition at Torpoint, with his two brothers Derek and Gary and cousin Andy currently serving. As well as his father-in-law, George, his brother- in-law, Brian Hobbs and uncle, Merv Cannon, were also firemen. Although living in Torpoint, he was born in Millbrook and still considers himself as a 'Millbrook boy'. He lived there until his marriage in 1971, when he moved to Antony, before settling in Torpoint. He has one married daughter. When he first joined the Fire Service, he was a shipwright in the dockyard before being self- employed for fifteen years. He currently works on the Torpoint Ferries in the maintenance section. 'I think 30 years is enough,' he said. 'I will miss the camaraderie with the other fire fighters and the great laughs we have had over the years. 'Sometimes we have been out on a job for twelve hours and even after that, being dirty and tired, we still have time for a laugh.'
