Premier Division Plymouth Parkway 0 Saltash Utd 1 (Tuesday) THE Ashes were well worth the victory that sent them back to the top of the Peninsula League, but the lack of a cutting edge meant their supporters were left biting their fingernails until the final whistle. There might only have been one goal in this game, but that did not mean that it was not an entertaining spectacle, as both sides had chances in a match that was played at a frenetic pace throughout. Parkway started brightly, with Lee Doel firing over from 25 yards, before Chris Wearing did well to deflect the ball off of Mark Berry's foot as the Parkway top scorer raced into the Ashes area. Saltash replied with Parkway goalkeeper Tom Blackler beating out Gavin Coulton's drive, with his defence recovering in time to block Marc Thorne's follow-up effort. Wearing was again called into action as Berry burst in from the angle of his area, but the Ashes 'keeper managed to get his fingertips to the striker's lob and the ball sailed into the side-netting. Saltash were enjoying the majority of the possession and, at times, the home defence was stretched, but thankfully for them, Blackler was on form with a fine save from Daley Simpson's downward header. Simpson then fired wide and Blackler dived bravely at Thorne's feet before Saltash finally made the breakthrough on 37 minutes. Gavin Coulton forced his way into the area, where Blackler made enough contact for the Ashes midfielder to go down, although in spectacular style, giving Thorne the opportunity to score from the penalty spot. It was only a great last-ditch challenge by Shane Powell that prevented Danny Lewis's low cross reaching Glen Palmer as Saltash finished the half on the attack. The second half began with Blackler making a fine reaction save from Mark Chapman's low volley, but it was not until the hour mark that Parkway fashioned their only real second-half chance. Doel made room on the right before firing over a cross that found Ryan Fice getting in between Dave Smith and Toby Clark, but his header was well wide of the mark. Saltash should have increased the margin of victory in the last 10 minutes as great skills from Stuart Clark ended with his final lob going just over the bar. Coulton then headed over from a good position, but he was unlucky to see his ferocious 20-yard effort bring a fine, if unorthodox, save out of Blackler.
