THE theft of a collection box on Remembrance Sunday has been described as 'despicable' by residents.

The box, which stood on the Field of Remembrance table in Liskeard, is thought to have been taken between 2 and 6pm.

Trevor Newbury from the Royal British Legion has said that they are not sure how much money was in the box at the time but on previous days there had been as much as £40 and he believes that because it was on the day of remembrance, there may well have been more.

He said: 'Although no one stands at the table, the box is chained to it which means that someone would have had to cut through it. This is the first time that it has ever happened to us.

'It's pretty despicable that someone would do this on the day of remembrance.'

Anthony Wallis, from Dobwalls, attended the two minute silence on Tuesday to honour his father who fought in the First World War.

He said: 'I think it is deplorable.

'They would not be here today if these people hadn't died for their country.'

The theft has been reported to the police and they are investigating the matter.

Sgt. Jo Williams said: 'We have no witnesses as yet and we need to check the CCTV footage from the area to gain any leads.'
