THELMA Sorensen has been re-elected chairman of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Economic Forum. Thelma, from Saltash and also an active member of the Objective One Business Task Force, was unopposed in her re-election to the post she has held since 2003. Carleen Kelemen, director of the Objective One Partnership, said: 'I would like to congratulate Thelma on her re-election and wish her every success with her work during what is a critical time for Cornwall's economic future.' Thelma said she recognised that she would have several key issues to tackle, particularly during her third year as chairman. She said: 'I am delighted to have been returned, unopposed, as chairman of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly forum for the next term and am very moved at the confidence the members have placed in me to hold that office. 'It is even more important to me that the forum has recognised the importance of bringing together, and developing, a strong public/ private sector partnership, with a true sense of ownership, to drive forward the economic regeneration of Cornwall. 'As the private sector chairman, I am very conscious that economic prosperity can only be achieved by meeting, and overcoming, the challenges of the global economy by concentrating on what we do best and by taking full advantage of the outstanding assets with which the far South West has been blessed.  'This process has been very much helped in recent years by Objective One which has delivered, among other projects, the combined universities in Cornwall and high speed Broadband coverage across the whole region through the "actnow" project. 'These two projects alone are already having a very significant, positive impact on business confidence and in overcoming the effects of peripherality we have suffered from for so long. 'However, we are now facing one of our greatest challenges as the present Objective One programme comes to an end and as we need to establish a vision of what the economy of Cornwall should be looking like in the next 15-20 years. 'I see my principle role as working with the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly forum in developing the strategy to meet and deliver that vision both within a local, regional and national context.'
