WITH regards to the front page story of last week's

Cornish Times – New Year fireworks CANCELLED.

The question of fireworks is important to the town of

Looe. Anybody who lives in Looe knew this problem was

coming, however.

It is like the credit crunch – the general public do all they

can to tighten their belts, but if a business does not make

as much money as it did the previous year it is called a

credit crunch.

If there are, say, 40 businesses in Looe and they each pay

£50, that would make a total of £2,000. Would this not

cover the cost of the fireworks?

Not to worry, the New Year will go ahead, fireworks or no

fireworks.

Town councillors were keen to hand the responsibility of

the fireworks over to the community, yet they did not

make clear exactly what those responsibilities were.

And, once again, health and safety has reared its ugly

head.

Although, no doubt when it comes to our silly six-week

season, no one will seem to be interested in health and

safety before the midnight hour – a member of the

general public could fall off the quay side or drown on our

beach, but that does not seem to matter.

All I can say – as a Looe man of 68 years – is that we seem

to be going down a road of no return. Once it's gone it's

gone, just like our post office – use it or lose it. At the end

of the day the New Year will come and go in Looe as it

always has done, with fireworks or not.
