Tollhouses are a relic of the time when the responsibility for the repair of our roads was in the hands of private trusts and they collected the costs from usually unwilling users of the roads.

When railways took people off the roads, they gradually became redundant. Local authorities had little use for them and many were demolished for road widening purposes. Fortunately, today, most of those left are "listed" by English Heritage and so are protected from this fate. At the Chiltern Open Air Museum in Buckinghamshire, we are getting as much information as we can about these historic buildings which are still standing in England today. To help us to do this, we ask your readers to let us know anything they know about tollhouses in their neighbourhood or anywhere else.

Please writer to us at "Toll House List, Chiltern Open Air Museum, Chalfont St. Giles, Bucks. HP8 4AD" or email us at "[email protected]">[email protected]".
