Bodmin 1 Saltash 0 THE best that Saltash United can hope for, from a season that once again promised so much, is to lift the runners-up trophy after this crucial defeat at Priory Park. Bodmin are now seven points ahead of the Ashes, and victory at home to Buckland this Saturday would be enough to see them crowned as the first Peninsula League champions. The game was certainly a bruising encounter, with most of the abrasions collected by the Saltash players, with goalkeeper Chris Wearing requiring extensive treatment after only four minutes. Wing-back Stuart Clark was forced to leave the field of play and he was taken to hospital during the interval suffering from concussion. In all, Bodmin picked up five yellow cards, while the Ashes had one, but the one major card-flashing incident went against Kevin Hendy's side, three minutes after the break, when Gavin Coulton was adjudged to have elbowed Darren Gilbert and was shown a straight red, with the Bodmin assistant- manager receiving a yellow for his part in the incident. Saltash were already a goal down at that stage after Danny O'Hagan had converted Steve Ovens' near- post cross on 41 minutes. Unfortunately, 10-man Ashes struggled to make any impact on Kevin Miller's goal in the second half, but the incidents had not yet ended as the game was held up for a lengthy period. with Bodmin's Aaron Cusack dislocating his ankle 90 seconds from the end of time.
