A TEENAGER has been praised after rescuing a woman from drowning in the River Tamar – during a dinghy accident which killed her 62-year-old husband. Peter Jordan, from Gunnislake, was pronounced dead at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, on Saturday evening after emergency services pulled him from the water near Saltash. He and his wife Nancy had got into difficulty after trying to return from their yacht on a mooring when their dinghy capsized. Mrs Jordan was rescued by 16-year-old Brett Watkins and three friends. Brett told the Cornish Times, that he heard someone crying out for help and initially thought it was children 'mucking about'. He then realised it was a women shouting from the river and he saw her floating face up a few yards out near the dinghy slipway. He was about to dive in and fetch her when his friend pointed to the lifebelt nearby, so he threw it and managed to drag her into the slipway. Brett then dialled 999 after being told that her husband Peter was still missing. A Ministry of Defence police boat, RNLI lifeboat and helicopter searched the area and found Mr Jordan's body near where Mrs Jordan had been rescued. Martin Gee, a Saltash town councillor, who saw the rescue, praised Brett and his friends, Vince Lucken, Hannah Hollis and Lizzie Daniels, for their quick action and said they should be nominated for an award.
