An era ended on Friday of last week when sales of discount vouchers for the Tamar crossings were discontinued in favour of the TamarTag system. Collectors on the ferries and bridge will continue to accept paper vouchers until the end of March, but the only way to pre-purchase discount crossings is now through the TamarTag. Unwanted vouchers can be exchanged for cash or Tamartag credit up to the end of March. David List, general manager for the bridge and ferry joint committee, said nearly three-quarters of all discount crossings were currently made using the tag and it was now necessary to finalise the transition to electronic tolling. 'The scheme is already proving its worth with significant reductions in congestion and peak period journey times,' he said. 'We are tolling a higher proportion of vehicles electronically than any other tolled facility in the UK.'
