CONNECTIONS between the Liskeard district and the historic Lanhydrock Estate will be explored during an illustrated talk.

Lanhydrock House, now owned by the National Trust, was the home of the Agar-Robartes family. Fire devastated the build ing in 1881, killing Juliana Agar-Robartes and, indirectly, her husband Thomas, who died within a year.

It was a Liskeard architect and building contractor who were engaged by the younger Thomas (Tommy) Charles to restore the house in High Victorian style.

Thomas, his wife Mary and their nine children made Lanhydrock a happy family home.

After a very brief spell as MP for South East Cornwall in 1906, Tommy Agar-Robartes became the representative for St Austell.

As with so many others, the lives of the family were shattered by the outbreak of the First World War.

Non-members will be very welcome at the Linkinhorne History Group talk, to be presented by Brian Oldham at the Crosslink Centre, Upton Cross. The event will take place on Wednesday (November 15) at 7.30pm.
