RNLI lifeguards went to the assistance of five surfers at Whitsand Bay on Sunday after they got into trouble in challenging weather conditions.

The surfers, four men and a woman, went into the water off Tregonhawke beach at 10am but, with the strong cross shore winds, large surf and heavy rain, they quickly got into difficulty.

They found themselves being swept across the beach towards the rocks and were struggling to get back to the shore.

Lifeguard Charlie Marshall saw the incident unfold and immediately responded with the rescue tube. Lifeguard Tristan Gillett assisted him while lifeguards Joe Saunders and Harry Moir launched the inshore rescue boat (IRB).

The female surfer was found close to rocks and in a lot of distress. She was rescued by the IRB and taken back to shore while Charlie provided assistance for one of the other surfers who had gone to assist the female. The remaining three people managed to get back to shore on their own, and noone was injured in the emergency.
