Plans for a new school in Torpoint could be one step closer after the town council pledged its support.

Proposals have been drawn up to build a new infant school and nursery on the same site as Carbeile Junior School and Torpoint Community College, after the Torpoint Nursery and Infant School building was declared unfit for purpose several years ago.

Torpoint mayor Mike Pearn said: 'Certainly if the plans are right the town council would be behind a new school. It's a very good opportunity for Torpoint.'

At a Torpoint Town Council meeting, Sue Coleman, the area head of service for children, schools and families, said the plans had faced some opposition.

'I think there may has been some misunderstanding that a document from the council may have inadvertently implied this proposal planned to amalgamate two schools,' she said.

'I make it clear that this is not the case.'
