A DOBWALLS mother of three young sons, all with autism or aspergers conditions, has set up a new support group for families also affected by Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Claire Finnegan Vyse started Get Together Cornwall at Dobwalls Memorial Hall, and was delighted with the response.

'I thought it might be just us sat there on our own, but we were so happy when another six families came along to see what the group was all about,' she said.

Claire, who was responsible for the setting up of Get Together Coventry, where the family formerly lived, which was very successful, says her sons have missed the friendship and fun, and that is what has prompted her to start up the new group.

'Get Together Cornwall will enable people to get to know other families and adult individuals who are affected by ASD,' said Claire.

'There are no age restrictions, and siblings, teenagers, parents, carers and grandparents are all welcome.

'The idea is that the children can enjoy the DS corner (playstation), arts and crafts, Lego and other activities, while the adults make the most of the quiet corner. Everyone is there to support one another.'

Claire's children are Liam (9), who has autism and also the Type 3 rare condition of Charcot Marie Tooth Disease, Kieran (8) who has autism and also suffers from Keytronic Hyperglycemia, and Owyn (7) who has aspergers and is an elective mute.

'My children got so much as a family out of my first group, and are excited we now have another one to look forward to,' said Claire.

'The emphasis is on socialising, fun and support.'

Kieran commented: 'It is very nice because everyone is happy with one another.'

Get Together Cornwall will be meeting every second Friday of the month, at Dobwalls Memorial Hall from 6pm-7.30pm.

There is a £1 fee only to cover the cost of the hire of the hall. Carers are free. The next group meeting is on Friday, November 9.
