Staff at Safeway in Liskeard proved they have big hearts by staging a Valentine Weekend at the supermarket to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The weekend included a red balloon race, a longest married couple competition, children's competitions and a free draw in which a Rover car could be won. Mr and Mrs Firth took the prize in the longest married contest, as they have been wed for 62 years. As a result they were presented with a bouquet of flowers, champagne and a meal for two at St Mellion International Golf and Country Club. On the Sunday they also released the 504 balloons in the balloon race, which also helped to swell the proceeds - the total amount collected for Marie Curie during the weekend being £900. The competitions took in a Design a Valentine card contest for youngsters aged between five and 11, and a chance to design a poem or verse for those aged between 12-16. Liskeard town crier, Frank Beer, was on hand to ensure that all customers were aware of the special events, and staff were invited to join in the fun by dressing in red. The management, instead, dressed as Cupid and Eros.
Staff also gave free chocolates to customers as they entered the store, and entertainment was provided by Liskeard school, St Pinnock band and Alan Dingle.
