Students from South East Cornwall have visited the site of the proposed new nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset. The group, studying rescue and emergency management at Duchy College, found out about potential career options at what could be one of the largest construction sites in Europe. Student Jack Charles said: ‘Visiting Hinkley Point gave me a great insight into the private sector’s need for emergency and rescue staff. We learnt about private firefighters and their roles within large facilities such as Hinkley Point. On top of a dedicated fire crew, there is also an ambulance and security crew on site 24/7. During construction they have rope and confined space rescue workers monitoring the safety of staff. ’ Hinkley Point C is set to be the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK, though controversry surrounds its progress.
