THREE students from Callington Community College have performed at the Plymouth Theatre Royal in Lord of the Flies. The contemporary dance production, based on William Golding's novel about a group of boys stuck on a remote island, has given 22 students the opportunity to appear alongside professionals on stage. Callington students Lloyd Lovell, Matt Martin and Sam Parham, as well as ex-student Michael O'Reilly, were selected for the cast after workshops earlier in the year attended by 400 youngsters from the South West. Year 11 student Matt said: 'This was the first time that I had worked with a professional dance company. The experience was fantastic and I have gained a lot of confidence in performing on a public stage. 'It is important to make sure that you take the chances when offered and don't hold back.' In the production choreographed by Scott Ambler and adapted and directed by Matthew Bourne, Golding's characters are brought to life with 'raw energy, emotional intensity and breath-taking performances'. Year 10 student Sam said: 'Every rehearsal was exciting and I felt so lucky and privileged to have had the experience. 'I've learned so much from the professionals – it has been a big eye opener into the world of dancing. It was the first time that I had worked with a professional dance company, and it has helped me to choose a career in dancing.' A spokesperson for the school said: 'The whole college is extremely proud of the dancers.'
