MOSCOW was the destination for a group of staff and pupils from Callington Community College last month. Sixth Form students Gregg Tysall, Alice Humphries and Hannah Lake from Callington Community College spent 10 days in the Russian capital at the International Space Olympics. At the opening ceremony of the Olympics all students took part in the entertainment, with the students from Callington becoming the Snow Queen, a fairytale character and a snowflake. Whilst the students were there they had to take part in Maths, Physics and Literature tests and had to make presentations. The students from Callington all did well in the events and Gregg Tysall was third overall in the Literature test. It was not all work though and they had time to have a tour of Moscow which included a visit to Red Square and the Kremlin, seeing Faberge eggs and costumes that belonged to Peter the Great and Catherine the Great. They also visited mission control which was on the outskirts of Moscow. Here students were in direct telephone contact with the cosmonauts and astronauts on the international space station. They touched Yuri Gagarin's space capsule and got into another one that had sent three cosmonauts into space. They also saw Star City where they train the cosmonauts and saw the cosmonauts being fished out of the pool where they do weightlessness training. At the end of the Olympics there was a prize giving. Alice Humphries won a prize for being the best presenter, Hannah Lake also got a prize for her presentation and Gregg Tysall got one for his Literature examination.
