Road, rail and power services across parts of South East Cornwall were affected by a heavy thunderstorm on Monday. There was some flash flooding due to a heavy, sustained downpour, with some areas also experiencing hail showers, leaving traffic conditions difficult on some local roads. Rail services around Liskeard were disrupted for up to an hour after the signalling equipment between the town and Bodmin Road Station was affected by a lightning strike. At about 3.30pm firefighters from Liskeard were sent to Duloe where the storm resulted in a number of properties suffering flooding. The crews assisted the owners with clearing the flood water. Meanwhile at a separate location in Duloe a crew from Looe Fire Station dealt with a transformer on a pole which was well alight. At the Morval hill junction with Sandplace Road, near Looe, the downpour caused traffic chaos with long tailbacks, as the result of a deep flash flood. Gill Bridges, of Polraen Country House Hotel, said: 'Fortunately the flood went as quickly as it came, subsiding 40 minutes later.' At Trago Mills a flash flood damaged the sluice gate on the upper duck pond. This resulted in all the water being swept out down into the lower pond. A spokesperson said: 'With Trago being so close to the River Fowey, and with quite a lot of water on site, our maintenance team are skilled at dealing with this kind of incident.'
