A protest march at Saltash, against Sainsbury's plans to build a supermarket and petrol station at Kimberley Stadium and Warfelton field, attracted a crowd of nearly 400 people armed with posters, placards and flags. They marched from the stadium to Saltash Guildhall. Town Crier Brian Whipp announced the reason for the march amid cheers from the crowd. Young football players from Saltash Juniors Football Club were among the protesters on Saturday, and people were mainly against the application for the loss of green space. Joining in the march was MP Colin Breed, and on reaching the Guildhall the march was welcomed by Saltash town mayor, Bob Austin, who urged people to write letters to Caradon council stating their views. Mr Breed said that it would be a disgrace if Caradon council decided to use the only large public open space in Saltash. He also called on the chief executive to withdraw the planning application. Mr Breed wants the council to register the land as a 'Town Green,' protecting it as a public open space. Speaking after the rally, he said: 'I was very pleased so many people turned out to protest and I hope Sainsbury's will recognise the strength of local opinion and withdraw its plans and seek, if necessary, an alternative site.' Leader of the council, John Turner, said: 'Caradon as the local authority must consider the application on its planning merits – in exactly the same way as any other.'
