TORPOINT Community School has made a pledge to raise a minimum of £1,000 to help victims of the recent tsunami disaster. On Wednesday, February 9, the staff and students of the school will take part in a day of educational assemblies and workshops where they will learn about how the disaster happened, the effect it has had on the whole world and how the countries affected go about rebuilding their lives. The students will be invited to donate their own money in the form of pocket money or money that has been given to them in exchange for performing a job in the home or community. Students will then be giving something themselves, rather than asking parents for money to donate. The money will be used to build a 'Money Tower of Strength' in the school foyer so there will be a visual representation of how much money has actually been given and how high their tower of coins can get. Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions members will be in attendance throughout the day, advising students how their donations will be spent, answering any questions the children may have and monitoring the construction of the Tower of Strength. Their professional expertise and knowledge regarding such worldwide disasters as the tsunami will be of great benefit to the educational focus of the day. However, it is not just a day for students. An evening Tsunami Musical Concert is planned, whereby a group of students from each year group will perform a song for parents, other students and members of the local community to enjoy. All those taking part have been rehearsing very hard and hope to attract an audience of more than 300 people to enjoy their performance. The show will take place at the school and starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Torpoint Community School on (01752) 812511.
