EUROPEAN Tour Golf will be teeing off at St Mellion International Resort during 2009, following the approval of a £100m redevelopment. Crown Golf, which owns the resort, has got planning permission to build a new 80-bedroom hotel and 265 golf homes at the course near Saltash. The company has also had plans accepted to upgrade and re-configure the golf course and put in an improved access road. It is all part of the company's plans to bring back European Tour Golf to Cornwall, with a deal already struck for St Mellion to host the English Open in 2009. 'We were delighted with the planning result,' said Crown Golf's property director Matthew Lynwood, who presented the company's case for redevelopment to Caradon District Council on Thursday. 'It is a massive project for St Mellion and Cornwall, so there were a lot of stakeholders involved with the project that needed to be consulted. We have been working very hard to make sure the proposals were properly presented at the meeting to enable us to start the work needed to prepare ourselves for the tournament in 2009.' The scheme is expected to provide a huge tourist and economic boost to Cornwall, as well as 50 extra full-time jobs. A further £200,000 of financial support for local employment initiatives over the next five years will also be granted, and St Mellion International Resort will be contributing £220,000 to local highways projects. However, not everybody was happy with the plans. Some nearby residents had raised concerns over the new access road and wanted the existing entrance to the golf club to remain open. But after a lengthy discussion, councillors voted eight to six in favour of the new access to the site, as they felt it was the safest option.
