The mayor and mayoress of Saltash, Bob and Jackie Austin, and three Saltash town councillors attended the St Luke's Hospice Awareness Day reception at the Copthorne Hotel, Plymouth, recently. The campaign highlights the growing need for specialist palliative and end-of-life care in Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall. The One in Five campaign title relates to the ratio of people in this area estimated to be likely to suffer from terminal illness, and to make people aware of the diversity of services offered by St Luke's Hospice. Among the speakers was Dr Mary Nugent, medical director of St Luke's, who spoke about her work as a consultant in palliative care, and said that the hospice covered not only cancer care patients, but also other types of life-threatening illnesses. It also supports nursing care in the community. St Luke's hospice covers Saltash, Torpoint, Callington, Liskeard and Launceston. A special Going Yellow day will be held on June 20 to highlight the work and needs of the hospice. Yellow is the chosen national colour for the hospices. Several traders in Saltash have promised to decorate their premises for the day.
