Ocean creatures from the largest to the smallest will be under the spotlight this week as the Looe Marine Conservation Group (LMCG) hosts half term wildlife events.

A talk tonight at the RNLI boathouse in East Looe will focus on research and conservation into the world’s largest fish - the Whale Shark.

‘Whale shark research is still in its infancy, however, new technologies and dedicated research have allowed us to better understand the behaviour and the whereabouts of these fish,’ said a spokesperson.

‘Studying groups of these sharks in the Western Indian Ocean has allowed us to recognise the threats they face so that we can put measures in place to protect them. And education is a key part of the ecotourism which leads to the success in whale shark conservation.’

This evening’s talk will be given by an expert in marine conservation who has studied whale sharks for six months in Tofu, Mozambique.

Meanwhile the LMCG will be holding its first Rockpool Ramble of the year at Hannafore on Sunday.

Children and adults are encouraged to come along to the free event at 11am and discover some of the plants and creatures that make their home in the intertidal zone.

Under 18s should be accompanied by an adult to the event and sturdy footwear is recommended.
