Ski success could lead to Euro event

The success of the recent national water-ski competition in the Tamar off Saltash has led to hopes that one day a European Grand Prix could be held there.

Water skiers from all over the country competed in the one day event - and enjoyed themselves in the town.

They were delighted with the warm welcome they got and said they hoped to return next year.

Among the competitors were some of the best in the sport, including Darren ~Kirkland, The World No2. Most of those taking part brought their families to enjoy a weekend in the town and surrounding area.

The championships also provided a good day out for local people, who lined every inch of the banks of the river to watch the competition.

The event, organised by the Plymouth Waterski Club in conjunction with Saltash Festival '99, was a first for the Tamar.

With fine weather and flat calm, it offered perfect conditions for the competitors to speed up and down the river at speeds of up to 100 miles an hour.

After the event the organisers discussed the possibility of further water skiing events.

'We are now hoping the British water Ski Federation will put Saltash forward as a location for a future European Grand Prix event', said Sue Hooper, chairman of Saltash Festival. She added that it was a great opportunity to showcase what Saltash had to offer.
