ENVIRONMENTALLY friendly business premises in Callington have been shortlisted for a second top environmental award. The six workshops and seven offices on Callington's Moss Side Industrial estate are now in the running for the Best Renewable Energy Scheme in the South West Renewable Energy Agency's Green Energy Awards. The awards celebrate the success of renewable energy in the region and are presented to individuals, local authorities, businesses and communities for blazing a trail for green energy. Environmental features in the units include: an earth energy ducted air heating system for the offices and similar systems for the workshops, energy efficient lighting with movement and daylight sensors, and a prototype wind-dam electricity generator unit that will eventually provide some of the electricity for the site. The units were designed by Caradon District Council and scooped a Green Award in the Michelmores and Western Morning News Commercial Property Awards only a few months ago. The project received a £176,575 investment from Objective One and £216, 654 from Caradon. Cllr Ivor Nichols, Caradon's Safeguarding the Local Environment portfolio holder, said: 'Caradon has strong green credentials, and we apply environmental issues to everything we do instead of just concentrating on traditional sustainability areas such as recycling. 'The Callington units have been let faster than any of our other business units, and three businesses involved in sustainable technology products have become tenants as a direst result of the green aspects of the workshop. 'One was sufficiently impressed to relocate a business from Cheltenham to Callington.' Director of the Objective One Partnership, Carleen Kelemen, said: 'This is once again excellent news. 'This development, helped by public investment, is now gaining a reputation nationally for its innovative, environmentally friendly methods.' The winners will be announced in Plymouth later this month.
