Callington library has re-opened to customers following the installation of a new self service kiosk. The machine uses state of the art radio frequency identification technology to enable customers to check out and return books themselves without having to wait for staff to help them. Similar kiosks are due to be installed in other libraries in Cornwall over the next six months. Cllr Eric Brooke, the executive member for community services, said: 'This technology will make things even easier for our customers and allow them to carry out a wide range of transactions themselves. 'Staff will still be on hand to deal with more complex enquiries. 'The installation of these new kiosks, with their 21st century technology, means libraries in Cornwall are moving away from the age of the rubber stamp into a new and exciting era.' Customers using the new kiosks will be able to use them for a number of tasks, including checking out their own books and other items, paying hire charges for CDs and DVDs, and paying overdue charges.
