A CORNISH boat builder is planning to embark on an extraordinary voyage from Cawsand to Falmouth – in a boat made from 800 plastic bottles. Andy Fox built Respect last year with the help of pupils from Fourlanesend Primary School who contributed milk bottles and other recycled materials to help create the six-metre trimaran. The children took the boat on its first trip around Cawsand Bay and now Andy plans to sail it to Falmouth, where it will go on show at the National Maritime Museum. Andy, who previously built the recycled plastic boat Plastiki, which sailed the Pacific from San Francisco to Australia in 2010, will be making the three-day, 50-mile trip in Respect with fellow boatbuilder and sailor Ian Munslow. Before the trip, Andy plans to work again with Fourlanesend School to build a support boat, and needs to raise around £2,000. The support boat will be designed by the children and will be made from a lightweight, strong honeycomb-structured polypropylene – a fully recyclable plastic. The project is designed to change perceptions about waste and to show how the boatbuilding industry can become more sustainable, says Andy. 'We think of plastic as a terrible, wasteful material which is damaging to the environment. This is often true because it is not used or disposed of properly,' he said. 'But plastic is also a cheap, versatile and very strong material which can be endlessly recycled if used properly. This makes it a lot greener than many materials used in boatbuilding and other industries.' Andy's aim is to work with local beach cleaning charity Rame Peninsula Beach Care to recycle the plastic waste collected from local beaches to build boats and other products, which he hopes will both provide local employment and improve the marine environment. After arriving in Falmouth, Andy, with Rame Peninsula Beach Care will host a forum on marine waste at the National Maritime Museum on July 21.
