South West Water's £3.5 million improvement scheme for Looe, a massive undertaking which began at The Millpool last September, where a new pumping station has been built, is now drawing to a close. The Town Forum were told at their meeting last Wednesday that the works will be completed by Easter.

The laying of an extra five kilometres of pipes to take away storm water and the building of a new storage tank should result in much cleaner water off the beach.

This means the quality of the water in the bay now stands a good chance of coming up to European standards, having been failed in recent years. Last year Looe was condemned as having one of the worst sea water qualities in the country.

Chairman of East Looe Town Trust, Mr Don Webb, says he hopes that the Environmental Agency will continue with regular testing of the sea water to give the town the results it is hoping for, after all the bad publicity. 'We are looking at a hopeful future for tourists and residents alike' said Mr Webb, 'with much improved facilities on the cards in keeping with the expectations of today's public. A clean bill of health for the bathing water is an important part of that future'.
