Sea Scouts and their leaders in Looe have celebrated the official opening of their warm, dry and modern new Scout hut.

The eight-week refurbishment has been carried out thanks to generous support from the West Looe Town Trust (WLTT).

The once damp, cold hut has been transformed with a new kitchen and toilets, disabled access toilet and shower, new flooring and insulation.

While the majority of the work was funded by the WLTT, the Scouts themselves raised the money for a new carpet by doing a sponsored swim and cycle ride, said Scout leader Vicky Richardson. Support has also come from one of the parents who refitted the second kitchen storage area, she added.

Photographs of the original Sea Scouts hut’s opening day from around 50 years ago were on display during a celebration evening. Cutting a cake to mark the occasion, Looe mayor Armand Toms noted that ‘it was a cold night, but the hut was nice and warm and dry’.
