Members of Cornwall County Council's Executive have given the go-ahead to plans to amalgamate Liskeard Infant School and Liskeard Junior School into one all-through primary school from September of next year. The meeting was told that numbers on roll at the two schools had been falling for several years and were unlikely to recover to former levels in the foreseeable future. There are, at present, 176 surplus places in the two schools. During the six-week consultation period on the amalgamation, which will take place on the junior school site, no formal objections were received. The cost of the amalgamation, currently estimated at £0.75million if three new classrooms are needed, will be met from a combination of capital receipts from the sale of local education authority buildings in Liskeard, and the county council's capital programme. The scheme was warmly welcomed by local county councillor George Hocking who said the community was in favour of the scheme. Your chance to name the school - see page 11.
