LISKEARD School and Community College is launching an initiative to get more computers in pupils' homes. The Community Connect project is in partnership with Cornwall Enterprise-led company Actnow and Computers for Charity, and subsidises the cost for families to get connected to the internet. Through Community Connect, students at the school, as well as its link primary schools, can have a state-of-the-art PC at their family home for a subsidised rate of £35. Actnow will also provide a rebate of £60 towards the first year's broadband costs for a number of households. It is planned that low cost, refurbished computers will also be made available to others in the local community at a later stage. Paul Taylor, business manager for Liskeard School and Community College, says: 'Extending the provision of IT into our students' family homes is all part of the process of reaching out to our community and engaging with them. 'The initiative will help greatly in providing all the fantastic opportunities that broadband connection has to offer, enabling links with the school and its staff outside of school hours. 'We are also very excited about extending the Community Connect project to all our partner primary schools, and the elderly and less mobile people in our community. 'We have a wonderful opportunity and an exciting chance to make a real difference for an absolutely minimal charge.' It is anticipated that once the computer and broadband internet is available in family homes, it will be used by various family members and that the benefits of broadband connectivity will then extend to a wider circle.
