A SCHOOL in Liskeard has been told by schools inspectors that it no longer requires Ofsted special measures. Ofsted has now graded Liskeard Hillfort Primary School as 'requiring improvement'. With behaviour and safety, and leadership and management at the school judged to be good, pupil attainment and the quality of teaching is still 'too variable' according to inspectors. The report praises Hillfort's associate headteacher for her determination to ensure that the school improves rapidly, and says that 'leaders at all levels work with a common purpose to improve teaching and raise standards'. Governance at the school, which came in for criticism in a 2013 report, is now good, say inspectors. Cornwall Council has supported the school effectively, says the report, highlighting that the 'decision to establish an interim governing body has been instrumental in the rapid pace of improvements'. The report notes that at Hillfort, a higher than average number of pupils are supported through 'school action plus' or have a statement of special needs, and that most children in the reception year start school with a lower level of development than is typical for their age. These children make a strong start due to good teaching, inspectors say. 'Achievement is improving strongly across the school,' the report reads. Progress and attainment in mathematics in Key Stage two was still a concern for inspectors, as well as consistency in the quality of marking. Nonetheless, inspectors said that: 'The quality of teaching has improved markedly in recent months. The school's leaders have demonstrated sufficient capacity for this to continue to improve.' 'It is this ability to keep improving,' said associate headteacher Sheryll Alexander, 'which means that by the time of the next inspection I believe we will achieve a good. 'A report like this could seem too critical – but it reflects the next steps we would be taking on our school action plan. We are pleased with the outcome, but we are not going to rest on our laurels.'
